Additional Support As You Choose Your Major
Choosing a college major isn't something you must do all at once, and it doesn't look the same for everyone. As you explore your options, there are steps you can take right now to stay curious, build valuable skills, and lean on support as you begin planning your future. Here are a few ways to keep moving forward while staying open to what's next.
Explore Your Interests
Trying new things is one of the best ways to discover what you enjoy. Join a club, take an elective that sparks your curiosity, shadow someone in a field of interest, or volunteer in your community. Every experience contributes to your perspective and helps you understand what might be a good fit when it's time to choose a major.
“I’m really looking forward to giving my presentation tomorrow on business ethics. I’m excited to speak to the judges; these competitions help us build the skills that guide our futures.”— Lilly J., FBLA member
Build a Strong Academic Foundation
You don't need to be certain of your major to strengthen your academic skills. A strong foundation in subjects such as math, reading, and science helps you stay open to new opportunities. Quality SAT®, ACT®, and AP® prep tools can support your learning now and prepare you for college-level coursework down the road.
“UWorld SAT prep helped me narrow down the content I was struggling with to get a better score the next time I took it. Always do the practice tests to understand the exam structure ahead of time!”— Karen K., HOSA member
Grow Real-World Skills
College isn't just about classes. It's also about communication, organization, and self-direction. Build these skills early by managing your time, speaking up in discussions, or writing outside class. Little by little, these everyday efforts add up. No matter your major, these skills will help you feel more prepared for any college major and life after school.
“It’s important to learn to be consistent. The more work you put in, the better results you’ll get.”— Sophia, HOSA member
Surround Yourself with Encouragement
Choosing a major can feel like a big decision, but you don't have to make it in isolation. Talk to people you trust, such as teachers, counselors, mentors, friends, or family, about what you're considering. Ask them what they've noticed you're good at or what careers they've seen connected to different majors.
Even a short conversation can spark new ideas or give you the reassurance you didn't know you needed. The right encouragement can make a big difference as you explore your next steps.
We met many students at FBLA and HOSA who were passionate, curious, ambitious, and still figuring out what comes next, just like you. When you explore your interests, reflect on your strengths, and connect with others who support your goals, you're already taking meaningful steps toward the future.
“It’s so exciting to be part of FBLA — I get to meet new people, many of whom have my same energy. I love being part of it; it’s so much fun.”— Zoe B., FBLA member
