SAT® Scores & Release Dates
A Complete Guide To Digital SAT® Scoring

Are you curious to know how the Digital SAT® is scored? This scoring guide explains everything you need to know about SAT scores, plus how Reading and Writing (RW) and Math (M) section scores contribute to your overall Digital SAT score. We will also explore the Digital SAT score range, conversion of raw scores to scaled scores, and score release dates.

How Is the Digital SAT Scored?

While the transition from the paper-and-pencil SAT to the Digital SAT comes with many changes, the scoring system for the latter remains essentially the same as its predecessor. The Digital SAT will be scored on a scale of 400-1600, with 400 being the minimum and 1600 as the maximum.

Your final Digital SAT score will be the sum of the Reading and Writing section score and the Math section score. Each section is further divided into two separately timed adaptive modules. The scores of these modules are added together to get the total section score.

SAT raw score conversion

A raw score is the number of questions you correctly answered on your SAT. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so guess if you’re unsure of the correct answer. Doing so boosts your chances of getting it right by 25 percent!

SAT Scoring
Section No. of Questions Raw Score Range
Reading and Writing 54 0-54
Math 44 0-44

On the Digital SAT, keep in mind that the difficulty level of each question and the types of skills it measures are also considered while calculating this score. Students will access questions aligned to their proficiency level on module two of each section. To get a high score overall, aim to get as many questions of all difficulty levels correct.

What are scaled scores?

After your score for each section is calculated, it is converted to a standardized score ranging between 200 - 800. This converted score is known as the scaled score. You get two scaled scores, one for the RW and another for the Math section. The College Board® sets this conversion scale and remains more or less the same yearly. However, there can be some changes depending on the difficulty level of the test. For example, on the Math test, a raw score of 42 can earn you a scaled score of 800 in some test administrations; on the other hand, you might need to answer all 44 questions correctly to receive an 800 on other versions. This method is called “equating" and is a standardized statistical process to ensure the fairness and validity of the exam score.

Formula for calculating Digital SAT scores

Now that you have a clear idea of what makes up your final Digital SAT score let’s understand how the RW and the Math section scores are calculated.

How Are the Digital SAT Sections Scored?

Each section of the Digital SAT is scored on a range of 200-800. Let’s break down how the raw scores of the RW and the Math sections are converted into scaled scores.

RW section scoring structure

For the Reading and Writing section, your raw scores from Module 1 and Module 2 are added together and then the total raw score is converted into scaled scores, ranging from 200-800.

Math section scoring structure

For the Math score, your scores from Module 1 and Module 2 are added together and the total raw score is then converted into scaled scores, ranging from 200-800.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Yes, the Digital SAT is graded on a scale of 1600. The scores on the Digital SAT mean the same as those on the SAT, so no conversion is necessary. For example, a score of 1150 on the Digital SAT test would be equivalent to an 1150 on the paper and pencil test.

The Digital SAT percentiles range from 1 to 99 and represent the percentage of students who did better or worse than you on the test. To learn about score percentiles, read our blog on What Digital SAT percentiles mean.

The average Digital SAT score is calculated by adding the total score of all the test takers divided by the total number of students who took the test in a particular year. For example, the average SAT scores were 1050 in 2022 and 1028 in 2023.

A good Digital SAT score is determined by the average score of a particular year. Since the average score for the SAT (both versions) in 2023 was 1028, any score above this would be considered relatively good. However, you should remember that any score that makes you a competitive candidate at the college of your choice is a “good score.”

Your score report includes a benchmark displaying your readiness for college-level coursework. Falling the 25th percentile (870 or lower) is considered below average.

Your SAT score report can be sent directly through the College Board. If you choose to have the score report sent before the scores are released, you will have four free submissions. If you prefer to send your official score report after the SAT score release dates, you must pay a fee. To know about this process in detail, read our blog on sending Digital SAT scores to colleges.

Yes, Digital SAT scores are directly comparable to SAT scores. Colleges can use Digital SAT scores in the same way as they used paper-and-pencil SAT scores.

SAT superscoring is a method of score interpretation that lets you select your best section scores from multiple test dates to get a new composite score. For the Digital SAT, colleges would take a student’s best RW score and their best Math score from multiple exams to credit the student with the highest possible SAT score. To know more about how your Digital SAT is superscored, check out our article on superscoring.

The Digital SAT scores and paper-and-pencil SAT scores are valid forever. However, colleges might not consider scores that are older than five years. In such a situation, consider retaking the Digital SAT. Remember to check with your prospective college on their SAT score policies.

Each scholarship program for SAT test takers will have its requirements. However, the higher you score, the better your opportunity of being rewarded with a valuable scholarship.

You can cancel SAT scores (both versions) at the testing location by requesting a Cancellation Form immediately after finishing your exam or sending it via mail. Read our blog on canceling the Digital SAT scores to have in-depth information about the score cancellation process.

You can request score verification tools from the College Board using two options: Question and Answer Services and Student Answer Services. To learn about these score verification services, read our blog on verifying your Digital SAT score.

SAT scores (both versions) are considered useful for getting admission into competitive colleges and majors. However, good grades are a significant representation of your hard work and dedication in high school. Although college admissions officers consider your high school GPA and SAT score during admission, a low GPA could be balanced by a high SAT score.
